About the book

On the occasion of celebrating the 75th Independence Day of this great nation, we pay our respects to the thousands of people who lost their lives and went to jail during India's struggle for freedom. However, only a few hundred of them have been properly documented in history books. Even rarer is the documentation of female participants. It is evident that a nation-wide freedom struggle could not have happened without the participation of both genders.

This collection of 50 articles per volume focuses on the stories of women who participated in the Indian freedom struggle. They did so in different capacities, from organising protests to going to jail and even sacrificing their lives. While the names and details of a few of these women might have been known to the world already, their documentation was limited to just a few lines here and there. Through their stories, we hope to shed light on the valour and strength these women possessed.

Only a handful of these women continued their presence in public and political lives. The majority, however, despite achieving a monumental feat of being an integral part of history, went back to their normal lives, where they faced even more struggles. By recognising the contributions of these women, we aim to create more awareness about their stories and the impact they had on the nation's history. We also want to help bring their legacy to life and ensure that their courage, strength and determination are remembered for many generations to come.
